Collaboration with Accommodation Office

We have mapped all the accommodations and their recycling systems under the Accommodation Office and did as much as we could to improve them. After numerous meetings, investigating, brainstorming, and designing… several improvements have been made.

What actually got changed?

  • new organic waste recycling option at Arkadien
  • designated bags for separating waste (glass, plastic, paper) inside apartments in Linsen
  • maps and guides on how to recycle at Bäckadal and Arkadien, when not possible directly at the facility
  • new designs of signs for recycling containers that are in English and coherent in garbage rooms at Fabriken and Linsen
  • new bins for inhouse recycling inside Arkadien
  • new bins for inhouse recycling inside Yellow House
  • improved and extended information on how to recycle in the manual received when new at Fabriken
  • information on the importance of recycling in the Rules and Regulation document students receive when moving in
  • more awareness of sustainability of JU Accommodation Office

Before, there were only few facilities offering students to recycle, even though sorting your waste is more than a norm in Sweden. There were several obstacles to having a fully functioning perfect recycling system at all facilities including unwillingness of landlords, logistical limitations, and planned closing of the facility.

What is the recycling state of all accommodations today?

Linsen: The Linsen accommodation offers a wide range of waste recycling options. In the garbage room there are appropriate containers for recycling food waste, paper packaging, newspapers, metal, plastic, colored glass, non-colored glass and residual waste. Improvements have been made in recycling within the student apartments, where students now have bags to sort plastic, glass and paper waste.

Fabriken: it is possible to sort food waste, paper packaging, newspapers, metal, plastic, colored glass, non-colored glass, batteries and residual waste in the garbage room with the designated containers.

Beta House:  it is possible to sort food waste, paper packaging, newspapers, metal, plastic, glass and residual waste in the garbage room with the designated containers. Bins for separating waste are in each kitchen.

Yellow House:  it is possible to sort food waste, paper packaging and plastic outside of the house. Metal and glass are sorted inside. There are bins for each waste type in the shared kitchen.

Bäckadal: Several posters have been put up that show students key recycling information, such as where they can find the closest recycling facility. However, there is no appropriate recycling facility at the accommodation, where there are bins only for residual waste.

Arkadien: It is possible to sort only food waste in the garbage area of the facility. However, there are posters giving key information on recycling and showing where the closest recycling facility is. There are bins in the shared kitchen for sorting waste.

Råslätt: It is possible to sort food waste, paper packaging, newspapers, metal, plastic, colored glass, non-colored glass, batteries, electric devices and residual waste in the garbage room with the designated containers.

Ekhagen: There are not any recycling options. The waste container is only for residual waste.

Delta House: There are only containers for glass and residual waste at the facility.

Gräshagen:  It is possible to sort food waste, paper packaging, newspapers, metal, plastic, colored glass, non-colored glass, batteries, electric devices and residual waste in the garbage room. There are bins for sorting the shared kitchen.

Match House: it is possible to sort food waste, paper packaging, newspapers, metal, plastic, colored glass, non-colored glass, and residual waste in the waste station with the designated containers nearby. In each shared kitchen there are bins for separating waste.

On this project have been working Dalibor Mrška, Marija Ilikj and Lenka Hélová, under SSA.

Due to this project, SSA got a great deal of understanding of waste management in Jönköping kommun. Wanna know more? Ask us!
